@Popo: This just proves that it's always good to try and learn some basics of the local language :3 Some people don't even consider that :mcheh:

@jacob: Some people are indeed unable to hear the differences, that's how they are built :') Like some Indians won't differ the sounds like J and Z (for them it's the same sound, or they are language purists... :mcmeh: ), or will mix up the S and SH sounds.
Just like some people can't even comprehend the English "th" because depending on the word they hear a different sound.

I meant the voiced and the voiceless dental fricatives /ð/ and /θ/.
as in "this" and "thing"

I had German at school but didn't even understand most things. then I moved and started speaking. not at once. and I still can't express everything I want in the most effective way. but things only started to make sense here. with English, I think the breaking point was when I switched to playing games in the original instead of a translation. it was a hard decision but looking back at it, I think it changed everything

I can't tell the difference between long and short vowels. we don't have it so I'm not trained to recognize the difference. I know it's there when I see the word written but that's what I know, not what I hear

Ah, yes, long and short vowels, I know them from Hindi, it's still hard to recognize them ;w; But sometimes I do and I'm unnecessarily proud at those times :mclol:

if I do at all, it's because of experience with the language, not because I heard it

I remember you as [ Y u u C u t e ] too (was that right?)

@memoriam: it's not easy to tell. language experience affects so much. sometimes I say words that I don't "know" but I know they work for what I want to say because I've heard them so many times and seen them achieve what I need right now. then I wonder if I'm actually saying what I think I'm saying XD and if I check it, sometimes it turns out I said exactly what I meant. but I didn't "know" the word before I had to use it

I think I probably do the guessing thing with my mother tongue as well XD also I sometimes will say a word for the first time that I've only ever seen written down, then kind of pause breathlessly to find out if someone will correct me saying it wrong hahaha. I'm actually worse at guessing English pronunciations because I try doing it in the French or Latin way without realising I'm doing it.
