Opposite to me
I use my apples and cupcakes on knuffel who are still "growing".
So when I dig with them (not very often tbh) they earn some experience points, and they can level up a bit more quickly.
I want to do both someday but don’t have enough so whenever a knuffel hit 100 I move the apples and cupcakes to the next one

That’s what i do with lava lamps, i move them to the next knuffel when i’m done with one. XD

But about the placing, well, you can hide them behind a wardrobe or something

Well whenever i place apples and cupcakes in a room, i also find a table or chair or ledge to put them on top of. XD so it doesn’t look out of place on like…the floor or something. Pft.
