There are a lot of cheap/ free museums in Massachusetts and I miss it now that I don't live there anymore. Also if anyone is traveling to Greece for some reason, most of the museums there are super cheap and tickets often cover multiple museums or historical sites.
I can mostly talk about France but it probably works in Europe in general, going to museums is seen as a right. And most are government funded. I worked in one, which was honestly impressive for something funded by a 10 000 people city, the entry price was less than 6 dollars. It was free for people under 18, even the Louvre is free for people under 18. We also had quite a lot of price reductions we were allowed to tell people about, most people were paying even less.
Obviously we were bleeding money so they did everything to save, sadly mostly on staff, which is why I left, but they did not touch the entry price.
London big museums are free too.
Moral of the story : if you want to support a museum, buy the goods. The entry price is nothing.
