I need to figure my life out. I'm sitting here one day before an exam and wondering what the hell I'm doing here. And I can't tell anyone about it.

You can tell us if you like :qh: talking it through, or even just the process of writing it down, might help you figure some stuff out.

I did write things down. I used an old blog of mine that I haven't used in a long time, and I ended up with a series of unorganized thoughts put into paragraphs and ended up feeling worse because I know some things now.

It's a little sucky when you know what you want to do, but aren't courageous enough to do it.

If the action is scary, I try to focus on the outcome. Like the good things that will happen if you do it. Or the bad things that will happen if you don't. Then when you're still thinking about it, do it real quick so you can't let yourself chicken out again.

What if the thing I want to do is drop out of college and pursue a career in music instead?

OK. *cracks knuckles* rant-at-you time.

1. WHY DO YOU NEED COURAGE? What punishment are you afraid of when your parents are supportive? YOUR PARENTS ARE SUPPORTIVE, GODDAMMIT. What are you scared of. What even. What do you have to complain about when they're not going to give you hell over your decision.

2. YOU THINK WHAT YOU'RE DOING IS SO DRASTIC, BUT IT'S NOT. I have four people in my batch alone who dropped out of college in their first year to come to my college. A lot of people take a gap year as well, to try something different and take the extra time to figure out where they want to go next. That's what you've done. You're younger than the average first year student, anyway.

3. DO YOUR RESEARCH, KID. I remember last time we talked about this. You actually thought the only music courses in colleges were certificate evening courses. I don't know HOW you landed up with such an idea. FYI, there are B.A courses in music, and those are your best bet.

4. MAYBE YOU'RE HAVING MISGIVINGS BECAUSE THE PATH YOU HAD IN MIND DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. Okay, you wanted to upload covers to YouTube, that's cool. But you can't leave everything else and do only that. That's not going to get you anywhere. Do you know how many cover artists there are on YouTube? It's only a minority that get record deals through YouTube. You cannot do something which relies so much on chance and good luck.

WE ARE NOT ONE OF THOSE LOVELY COUNTRIES WHERE YOU DON'T FINISH HIGH SCHOOL AND YOU CAN STILL MAKE A LIVING. Sorry. You need to get yourself a degree. You need to be qualified for a job. And when both the degree and job can be music related, I don't see why you have to leave everything and make YouTube covers. Following your dreams is a very romantic thing, but you still have to be practical.

Study a B.A music. And if after that you're not into an M.A in the same thing, the FTII and its masters in sound recording is an option. (This means you'll work with film and TV, creating sound scores. You'll still be composing and working with music. Think about it.)

And WHILE you're studying/working you can focus on making your music career take off. I don't know how viable the stuff artists usually do- making demos and sending them to record labels, for instance- is in India. But you can find out what independent artists do. You're not going to be mainstream, Kira, you're not going to be singing for Bollywood. You have to make contacts and find out.

LIKE DUDE, WHAT EVEN. I KNOW MORE ABOUT PURSUING MUSIC IN INDIA AND I NEVER EVEN THOUGHT OF APPLYING. SERIOUSLY, DO YOUR RESEARCH. At least talk to my mom goddammit.

That's harder, to my mind. That's an ongoing, you have to live with it forever thing, instead of one single moment that's the exception instead of the rule.

*blink blink* :mcomg:

Okay.
Spoiler

Not so sure anymore. They've always been very sly about these things to be honest. My dad told me it was perfectly okay to have a a boyfriend once in twelfth grade, when I joked about having one and ended up forbidding me from going to school from the very next day. So.
Ambarsariya wrote:At least talk to my mom goddammit.
Maybe I should. When I come back home this time, I'll just casually ask her. It's too late to even apply for entrance tests now goddamnit.
Ambarsariya wrote:YOU THINK WHAT YOU'RE DOING IS SO DRASTIC, BUT IT'S NOT.
It's drastic for me dude. Dropping out isn't exactly child's play even if lots of people do it.
Ambarsariya wrote:MAYBE YOU'RE HAVING MISGIVINGS BECAUSE THE PATH YOU HAD IN MIND DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.
You'll probably get even more mad at me for this lol but I don't really have a plan in mind. I just saw YouTube as a way to start off. God, you're right, I should do some research.

I've just been spending my time crying like an idiot and letting myself get paralyzed out of God knows what.

If you're serious about music as a career, I recommend listening to Leah McHenry's stuff: https://www.savvymusicianacademy.com/blog She's a successful online musician who makes a whole lot of money and she occasionally does free training courses. I can't see them on her website at the moment but I have seen them online before, maybe google her name and have a look for them.
They're super informative - I was using them from the standpoint of building an online following for other stuff and it even helped me.

If you don't want to drop out, do what I did. Study and do your course, and in the meantime, follow your vocation (in this case, write and perform music in your spare time). You end up with a degree and also plenty of practice in what you want to do, and you might even have a bit of a fanbase going by the time you start. Most of the time it's not really necessary to go to school for the creative arts. I say this as a photography degree-holder who learned everything about photography after my degree ended :'D

JK: that's great! :mcglee:

It's kind of unfortunate that Kira is finding her law course stressful, unpleasant, and completely consuming her time though. And since most education in India is like that, might as well do something you find more bearable so that you don't mind it taking over your life.

Kira, I replied over on Jabberwocky Junction to this stuff. It's kind of weird that conversation about it is happening in multiple places because although you're getting help and advice from more people that way, they don't have the context of what is being said in the other threads :mcheh: but even if stuff gets repeated it's just as well, really. It'll just reinforce in your head.
