also what you said about Ngaio Marsh lmaoooo i'm actually reading that particular book rn- isn't it Artists in Crime?
Well, there's a number with the two of them, so that is probably one of them! Is that the one where they first meet?

@Nankuii: awww, I was hoping you could stay and talk more with us later but it sounds like you have a really full schedule. I'll just have to look forward to when you can sneak off and post with us here and there.

Yes, I usually don't mind when fruits just start turning alcoholic, but the texture combined with how far these had gone, it was a bad combination.

yes, it's the one where they first meet! and i guess everyone is kind of adorable :mclaugh: i just can't really take to Roderick Alleyn for some reason (for no reason actually, none that i can see) but that doesn't really mar my enjoyment of the books; just makes it so i can't get sucked in. i mean Poirot is frigging adorable and so is Miss Marple. i guess i just don't want a typical eligible-bachelor-detective-hero (does that even make sense oh god you know what i mean i don't want trenchcoats and i don't want bowler hats and i don't want him to be dark, dashing, ruggedly handsome and moderately young idk)

Well, he's only an eligible-bachelor for a few books; for most of the series he is married, and he does age. But his personality is pretty constant, so if that's a factor, it'll remain one.

And he does have that slightly supercilious air of people who have a bone-deep belief in their own superior worth, so I can see where it would be off-putting. I found it so, too.
(I actually found Hercule Poirot to have more of that, though? He was very patronizing! I figured if you could take it in that form, then Alleyn would not be so bad? There must be another factor to it. Perhaps it is that Alleyn takes himself too seriously, whereas Poirot is a little more aware that he can be viewed as faintly ridiculous.)

There are quite a few of the books which are told mainly from the viewpoint of the pool of suspects, though, and in which Alleyn comes in only at the end. So maybe skip ahead in the series to one of those, so you can try the gamut, and if you don't care for it, either, then you know there's no point in trying any longer...
I think "Death and the Dancing Footman" is mostly non-Alleyn characters, and when he does come into things he's much older. For instance. I'll have to check, might be mixing them up.

After all, plenty of other authors out there. No point reading something you aren't enjoying!

Nankuii, it is like a race, then!
How does that rhyme go about the gingerbread man?

Post, post, post, fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the Wuffel-feeding-(wo)man!

you've hit upon it! i don't like the Holmes-type detective at all. don't give me eccentric unless it's an endearing sort and don't give me someone who takes themselves too seriously even if they would be justified in doing so lol. i know i'm reading about murder but i want to go awww. Poirot is very theatrical, but he also doesn't mind much when he's not taken seriously. (i think i'm impatient with a certain kind of male character if he's the protagonist. christie could've put someone a lot like alleyn as a side in one of her books and i'd put up with him lol)

I'm trying to remember if it's "Night at the Vulcan" or "Final Curtain" or maybe "Killer Dolphin" but there are a number of them where it mostly pays attention and most of the book is with the cast of a play, and a large portion of those you follow a female protagonist.
You might enjoy them more.

Still, though, all of Ngaio Marsh's characters tend to take themselves pretty seriously.

Perhaps best to just skip her and move on to another author?

Dorothy Parker's main series is also a male detective (Lord Peter Whimsy). He's a WWI vet with some PTSD issues that are never called that by name, since they didn't have the term then (I think they called it "trench shock" or something?) so he also tends to take things more seriously, but he does know that he can be ridiculous, even if he is more inclined to agonize over it than to be amused by it. So you might run into some of the same issue with her. On the other hand, she makes a point of saying how he doesn't really look handsome. (Apparently he has enormous stick-out ears, and I forget the rest).
He does also start single, but it also does change.

The thing is, that most of what I consider "cozy" mysteries tend to have male protagonists...

Oh! Have you tried Sarah Caudwell? She only wrote a grand total of 4 or so, but I love that the detective-hero in those stories is maybe a heroine and not a hero... Professor Hilary Tamar. Somehow I got through all the books without realizing that never once was a gendered pronoun used for Professor Tamar, and so the reader is left to imagine whichever form of gender best suits their imaginings.
It's very cleverly done.

Oooooooohhhh! Wait, I overlooked the obvious!

Okay, try Elizabeth Peters' "Jacqueline Kirby" mysteries! Cozies with an unforgettably wonderful female sleuth who is far too smart to take herself seriously.

I've spent pretty nearly all of my life living with a lot of very elderly people who like to lecture at me. I do my best not to listen too much, but some of it sticks anyhow. :mcsweat: Probably been picking up the bad habit of dispensing advice unasked, too. Sorry!

Nankuii, yes! The run run as fast as you can one. Tried to parody it.
