Ha ha, that makes sense! I always wondered why they weren't called beachberries, since they are one of the few berries which will grow close to oceans along beaches.

Although I think that's only a couple of varieties that do that.

You know what? Now I want strawberries! :qno:

I font think I ever tried a fig o.o So I have no idea how they taste.

My favorite fruit is peaches. I was born in the midwest of the US so I was able to eat them right off the tree. But now I live on the west coast and they dont have that here. But if I have to think of a locally grown fruit, I love asian pears. xD

I really enjoyed trying to catch fireflies when I was younger when I was over there. But unfortunately I moved over to the west coast when I was five. xc

Fireflies are so neat!

Asian pears are nice. I like how they are crisp instead of mushy, but they still have the pear flavor, and you can fry them up and they turn super sweet.

You went from inland to near an ocean, then! Do you visit the ocean much or eat seafood often?

my favourite fruits are ice apples, custard apples, indian grapefruit, and all the sour-ish berries like blackberries and blueberries.

That's harder, to my mind. That's an ongoing, you have to live with it forever thing, instead of one single moment that's the exception instead of the rule.

Aki: I never cooked asian pears before. I havent even thought of that. What kind of dishes would you put them in or would you just eat them by themselves?

My family does go to the ocean everyonce in a while. Maybe a few times a year. If we go camping, we camp out by the ocean. xD I havent eaten a lot of seafood but I do like crab and shrimp.

Mynah: I've never heard of ice apples or indian grapefruit. Jesus. I need to get out more xD lol Ive never had blackberries/rasberries before either. Ive picked blackberries with my grandma but I dont think I ever ate them because I thought I didnt like them. But I love blueberries. I wanna try and learn how to bake like blueberry muffins and pie. I wanna learn how to bake pastries in general. xD

Well, it depends! I like to eat some plain, but they really are very sweet that way so it's more of a dessert for sharing if you do that; like slice up one asian pear and fry it and serve 2-3 slices to several people at once while it's hot. Maybe if you want to be fancy you could sprinkle cardamon or cinnamon on top.

I think for actual dishes, sometimes I cook them down and use it instead of plums to make a teriyaki sauce (especially when plums aren't in season or someone ate them all before I could use them).
Once I chopped one up and put it into a curry when I didn't have any pineapple and wanted something sweet; but the pears were sweet without the sour bite that pineapple had so it didn't work as well; I think if I did that again I would also add more tamarind paste to counteract it.
They're good in fritters.
Or if you make pancakes, you can use cooked asian pears as a topping instead of syrup (less messy, more flavorful, almost as sweet).
You can use them as crepe filling, or if you do the double-cooked stuffed crepes like blintzes they are a nice filling in that too.
I've rendered them down and used it like applesauce (any place you would use applesauce you can use asian pears instead of apples).
If you take flat bread and bake it with some pungent cheese and chunks of asian pears and maybe some fresh thyme it's very good.

I'm not really sure what all; usually I cook without recipes so that coming up with the names of dishes is hard, because I don't know of a dish that's very similar.
Like when you cook up root vegetables and then mash them and whip them up fluffy and put it into a dish and bake it until the tops are crispy, whatever that is called?
Well, you can stir in some chopped fruit and it's really nice. Asian pear works well in that, too.
Whatever it is called.

(Ahh, We're leaving so soon, Grandma just has to finish packing, and I spent all this time on one long post instead of lots of little ones for donuts! Foolish!)

I cooked it with sesame oil and prawns and veg and then later rice for fried rice

It's what makes it get that fried rice taste as if it's from the chinese take away

Akili - You should write a cook book! That would be neat. You have all these interesting food ideas I've never heard of. I'll name your recipes for you. lol.

My favorite fruit is watermelon. Which CAN be grown here, but I don't think it works super well. I also like blackberries and they grow wild here so definitely local.

Oh if berries count, too then I go for blackberries and raspberries! I loooove them! They are locally grown here, but still quit expensive :(

I love Kaki and Watermelon in general :)
Also a fan of nectarines.
I guess I like most of the fruits xD

I think I just tried the deep purple figs as well..

I like strawberries, but only the sweet ones. And if they are still hard.
