we had a similar healthcare system.
My parents insisted that I get braces back when it was free and when I was only a child and everyone wore them but I would act up and never get them. My teeth is actually pretty good, just on the lower row one of my front teeth is slightly bent inwards and it never bothered me nor is it really visible but I kinda regret it at times.
