Everyone I've talked to, when they add self-checkouts, no jobs are lost, they just move to a different area.

My Walmart, for example, normally only had like two cashiers open, now they have 1-2 plus self-checkout which has a few people there to help people....that means MORE jobs or hours, whichever, for people.

I prefer self-checkout due to hating standing in lines and hating people.

There are some things I'm uncomfortable buying from a person so in those cases I'm glad self check outs exist. I don't want all cashiers replaced, but I'm glad self checkouts exist so I can purchase more embarrassing items without being judged.

Self-checkouts are my saviour. I'm so awkward that I hate going through and making small talk with the cashiers. I also dislike talking and having to say "card please". Plus, there are so many more self-checkout counters here that it's super fast to zip through, scan, tap to pay with my phone and out I gooooooo.

They do leave a lot of room for people to misuse like people scanning expensive things as cheap produce such as potatoes or carrots ovo;;;

As someone who has worked as a cashier, they're pretty decent as an idea. I prefer to use them, personally, but they do need attention fairly often. No warning about running out of change, then they'll just stop working when they run out, ID'ing, etc. And, honestly, at least where I work, if there's not a super long line, a cashier is faster. I just burn myself out sometimes, but if I know the cashier I'll go through their line lol

Our supermarket has both self checkout and normal cashiers specifically for those who don't know how to use self checkout or if it is easier to do at a cashier (eg when buying multiples)

Where I come from we have Self Checkouts and regular ones. Most self-checkouts have an item limit as they are pretty much express lanes.
I use self-checkouts wherever possible because I hate trying to make small talk with strangers and hate it when they give you judging looks about what you're buying.

I do use self checkout and sometimes I LOVE it, mostly when there isn't a huge line for the kiosks. I truly do not understand how people have no idea how to scan things. Did they never watch a cashier do it? I have sometimes left self checkout to go to a lane simply because people are taking way too long to try and check out a few items.

So I tried this out again recently.

Turns out it's MUCH easier if you don't bring your own bags.
Which I always do.
And this was the first time that the person (who came over to help) explained what was making the machine so fussy.
So now I know....

I go to cashiers about 90% of the time because I find self-service is pretty annoying. I used to get pretty stressed out paying for things at actual cashiers when I was younger, worrying that they would judge me for what I bought or if I paid in change or if I was too chatty etc. Though I'm working retail now and I have done for 4 years, the first 3 years I was predominantly a cashier. After working the role I really don't care when I go into shops now because I know the kind of things that I care about when I'm at work, and honestly a lot of the stresses that I used to have about paying seem stupid to me now. Like I know for a fact that I don't care what people buy and it's not something that I pay attention to really, I love when people pay in small change because it keeps my till nice and full and I absolutely love people that are up for a bit of a natter when they come by (though at the same time, if you're quiet a little break from constant chatter is nice too so there's literally no down side). Also in regards to buying things with an age restriction or security tags or even if it's a new store for you and their self-service is different to others, it's so much faster going to an actual cashier :q2c:
